LaPaglia lines up after wildfires
Soccer superstar David Beckham will face off against Sydney FC director and TV star Anthony LaPaglia in a charity match to raise money for those affected by the devastating bushfires in Southern California.
Beckham's team, LA Galaxy, will host Hollywood United FC at the Dominguez Hills next Sunday, with LaPaglia hoping to relive his glory days as a goalkeeper with Adelaide City and West Adelaide in the old National Soccer League back in the 1980s.
It will also be a chance for LaPaglia to see the Galaxy play first hand before Sydney's exhibition match against the Major League Soccer club at Telstra Stadium on November 27.
"Everyone's expected to play, including David," said Galaxy general manager Alexi Lalas, who will also line up for Hollywood.
"This is a great opportunity for our organisation to do something positive for our area, our home and for our friends and neighbours who have been impacted by these incredibly devastating wildfires."
The Hollywood FC line-up is also expected to include actors Jimmy Jean-Louis and Costas Mandylor, former guitarist with the Sex Pistols Steve Jones, Vivian Campbell of Def Leppard, former World Cup players Frank Leboeuf of France, Richard Gough of Scotland, and Americans Joe-Max Moore and Eric Wynalda.

I created a new category in the gallery. It's called 'Candids' and I'm gonna upload there photos of Anthony which don't fit to the 'Public Appearances'. Today I'm adding photos of Anthony playing/practising football, but it's also the place for photos of Anthony shopping, walking, dining etc. I realize that for some of you it may not be ok to post this kind of pics, but it's still our Anthony. SYDNEY FC shareholder Anthony LaPaglia could be investing in rival A-League club Adelaide United
The Hollywood actor was being wined and dined by United football director and former chief executive Michael Petrillo and injured marquee player Paul Agostino in Sunday's win over Central Coast.
He watched the game from a corporate box at Hindmarsh Stadium, where he played in the NSL with Adelaide City and West Adelaide.
LaPaglia, who was born in Adelaide and has a 7.5 per cent stake in Sydney FC, is believed to be eager to spread his soccer wings in a possible partnership with Adelaide United.
Sydney FC chief executive George Perry said investing in a rival club had not been raised. "To the best of my knowledge he's shareholder of Sydney FC and we've not discussed about him investing in other clubs," said Perry, who was unaware that LaPaglia was in Australia.
"But I would have thought it would be a conflict of interest (investing in another club) if he's a director of Sydney."
Petrillo said he preferred not to comment about a pending business deal involving LaPaglia and Adelaide United.
"We discussed a whole range of things to do with the A-League and football in general," Petrillo said. "I don't want to comment on anything else."
It is believed Adelaide owner Nick Bianco is also keen to share the club's ownership. Last year Bianco became the sole Adelaide director when philanthropist Gordon Pickard sold his share to the building mogul.
LaPaglia flew to Adelaide on Saturday to join his ex-teammates at (Adelaide club) Azzurri to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the club's first premiership.
But he will miss Sydney FC's blockbuster against Melbourne Victory on Saturday as he departed for Los Angeles.
Of concern to Sydney would be LaPaglia's relationship with Petrillo. They have a long history with the pair training together under former Australian keeper Charlie Horvath in the 1970s as teenagers.
Petrillo said he rekindled the relationship with LaPaglia once he became a shareholder of Sydney FC after investing a reported $750,000 in 2005.
LaPaglia has been lower profile since season one and particularly since his very public spat with coach Terry Butcher last season.
Although he did travel to Japan for the club's Champions League clash against Urawa Reds in May and is set to do a round of radio interviews this week to help promote Sydney's match against Melbourne.
"He's been very helpful and made very constructive contributions," Perry said.
LaPaglia had not visited Hindmarsh Stadium since 1980, when he was part of the defunct West Adelaide side.
"It's the first time he's been back to Hindmarsh in 27 years," Petrillo said.
"He was very impressed with the stadium and impressed with the team. He wished he'd come back earlier and he'd certainly like to pop into Adelaide again. He's keen on promoting the league and marketing it properly and he sees a very big future in it."

LaPaglia leads Balibo five thriller cast
Anthony LaPaglia has signed on to star in a new Australian film telling the story of the five newsmen who were shot dead in East Timor in 1975.
Balibo, co-written by David Williamson and Robert Connolly, is described as a tense political thriller that re-creates the events surrounding the shootings during the Indonesian invasion.
LaPaglia will play another Australian journalist, Roger East, who was shot dead in Dili while investigating the deaths of the Balibo five.
It will be his first appearance in an Australian film since his performance in Lantana.
"I'm looking forward to returning home to work again," said LaPaglia, who is the star of US TV show Without A Trace.
"It's such an inspiring team and an important story for Australia and the region."
Connolly has signed on to direct the film, which is being funded by the Film Finance Corporation. John Maynard will produce.
Shooting is set to start next year.
