Football-mad Anthony LaPaglia's passion for A-League club Sydney FC will cause the production of hit TV series Without A Trace to relocate to Tokyo in December.
The Australian actor, who plays FBI special agent Jack Malone in the show, has convinced Hollywood heavyweight producer Jerry Bruckheimer to commission an episode of the program to be shot in Japan when Sydney play in the FIFA Club World Championship.
"CBS loves the idea," LaPaglia said yesterday from his home in Los Angeles. "It wasn't really that hard to convince them. They like the idea of featuring the Yakuza [Japanese mafia] in a storyline for Without A Trace.
"We're going to shoot second unit in Tokyo while the Club World Championship is on. CBS has an affiliate in Tokyo to help us out with everything.
"I'm going to try and get a cameo role for [coach] Pierre Littbarski written into the episode.
"In fact, I'll try and get the whole team in there somehow."
LaPaglia, a co-owner of Sydney FC and once a goalie in the old NSL, is desperate to see his team play after being unable to get time off to make next week's A-League kick-off.
Sydney launch their A-League campaign at home against Melbourne Victory on Sunday.
"I have organised for people to send me text messages to keep me updated during the game," LaPaglia said.
"I will admit to being anxious about the start of the season. I hope it will go well and that people will get out there and support the team.
"I have so many aspirations and hopes for the league but I'm also realistic. It will take time, work and patience but I really believe that this will work."
Nine months ago the club did not even exist. "We have come a long way, very fast, and we have grown faster than anyone expected," LaPaglia said.
In December's Club World Championship Sydney will play against global football giants that include European champions Liverpool and South American champions Sao Paulo from Brazil.
Sydney qualified for the tournament as champions of Oceania. If the team wins the inaugural A-League championship it will also qualify to play in next year's Asian Champions League.
"The A-League's future path has to be through Asia," LaPaglia said.
"There's not much point in having a league that's only a domestic competition because you will just not go anywhere.
"An important part of football's appeal is its international element and I would like Australia to become part of the world football market."
Sydney has already received increased coverage in Asia through the football team's involvement in the Club World Championship
